The COMMANDO Silver Dog Tags With Silencers are an American-style identification tag set supplied with two tags, a short chain, a long chain and a set of silencers. Based on the traditional military identification-tag format, the set is suitable for collectors, military enthusiasts, historical displays and anyone looking for an American-style dog tag set.
Military identification tags have a long history. During the American Civil War, soldiers used improvised methods such as paper notes and wooden identification markers to help ensure they could be identified if killed. The U.S. Army later adopted formal identification tags, with mandatory issue established in the early 20th century. By the Second World War, the familiar oblong-style tags were in use and service members were issued two tags attached using chains of different lengths.
Silencers are associated with the military dog-tag tradition because they fit around individual tags to reduce the noise produced when the metal tags strike one another. The U.S. Naval History and Heritage Command specifically records silencers being used with post-World War II-style identification tags.
