The COMMANDO Flag of the Northern Territory Patch features the distinctive design of the Northern Territory flag, combining the Territory's official colours of black, white and red ochre. The left side displays five white stars representing the Southern Cross, while the ochre-coloured section on the right features a stylised white Sturt's Desert Rose with a black seven-pointed star at its centre.
The Northern Territory flag was officially adopted on 1 July 1978, marking the granting of self-government to the Territory. It was first raised during a ceremony on the Darwin Esplanade overlooking Darwin Harbour, an important occasion in the Territory's political history.
The design was created by prominent Australian artist and illustrator Robert Ingpen, who was commissioned to develop a flag using ideas submitted by members of the public in a design competition organised by the Northern Territory Government. Unlike the flags of Australia's states, which generally follow the traditional British Blue Ensign pattern, the Northern Territory flag uses a distinctive two-panel arrangement without the Union Jack.
The flag's symbolism reflects the Territory's landscape and identity. The black, white and ochre colours are its official colours, while the Southern Cross represents Australia's southern skies. The Sturt's Desert Rose, the Territory's floral emblem, appears on the ochre panel. Its seven petals and seven-pointed central star represent the six Australian states and the Northern Territory, recognising the Territory's place within the Australian federation.
Sturt's Desert Rose was proclaimed the Northern Territory's floral emblem in 1961, well before it became a central feature of the flag. The plant is native to central Australia and is particularly associated with rocky slopes and dry creek beds, making it a fitting symbol for the region.
