The COMMANDO State Flag of South Australia Patch features the official flag of South Australia, with its dark blue background, Union Jack in the upper-left corner and distinctive State Badge on the right. The badge depicts an Australian Piping Shrike, also known as the White-backed Magpie, standing on a branch of a gum tree against a golden rising sun.

The South Australian State Flag was officially authorised by proclamation on 13 January 1904. Its introduction followed Federation in 1901, when the former Australian colonies became states and developed distinctive emblems to represent their identity. Like the other Australian state flags, its design follows the British Blue Ensign tradition, with the Union Jack in the upper-left corner and a state-specific badge in the fly.

The Piping Shrike badge was proclaimed separately on 14 January 1904. Its original illustration was prepared by Robert Craig of the School of Arts in Adelaide. A later version was drawn in 1910 by Harry P. Gill, who was Principal of the School of Arts. The bird is the white-backed form of the Australian Magpie, formally known as the Piping Shrike in South Australia's heraldic description.

The golden background represents the rising sun, while the gum tree branch provides a distinctly Australian setting for the bird. The design connects the state's identity with its native landscape and wildlife. Initially intended for government buildings and vessels, the flag's use was encouraged more widely in 1908, allowing government institutions and private citizens to display it.
