Historical Background: Navy and Grey
The kepi originated in France and was adopted by military forces in Europe and North America. During the American Civil War (1861–1865), both Union and Confederate soldiers wore variations of this cap, although headwear styles differed between regiments and changed throughout the conflict.
Navy: Dark blue became strongly associated with the Union Army of the North. Union soldiers commonly wore dark blue coats, with light blue trousers also widely issued. A navy kepi is therefore a useful choice for a Union-inspired reenactment or cosplay outfit. Some Union regiments also wore distinctive cap designs and contrasting trim.
Grey: Grey became strongly associated with Confederate forces in the South, whose uniforms varied considerably according to regiment, supplier and the availability of materials.
